Katsutoshi toya

(b. 1965, Tokyo)

Katsutoshi specialises in Nihonga (a Japanese style of painting), in which he depicts scenes of the Sengoku period (from the warring states period).

While attaining his M.A., the artist studied a variety of mediums, notably metal, lacquer and textiles. This fascination led to his creative practice today, in which he is committed to creating new mixed mediums as well as techniques. His pieces present a dedication to applying multiple layers with a variety of mediums, including shells and Japanese natural mineral pigments.

In addition to this ongoing series of figurative works, Katsutoshi also paints landscapes that infused with Japanese aesthetics.

Katsutoshi says of his practice:
“Which period I paint, whether the warring states or modern era, I would like to state ‘the beauty of Japanese culture’ in that it never stops reforming, time after time”.
