Noriko KURAFUJI

(b. 1971, Tokyo)

During Noriko’s years at Joshibi University, she focused on oil painting, Japanese traditional painting and art conservation. After completing her studies, she gained work experience at the Institute of Medical Science at Tokyo University. This involved researching many samples of cells, which resulted in a great appreciation for the delicate micro world. The impact on her creative practice was pronounced and is still evident today.

In terms of physicality, Noriko’s work shows different brushstrokes in multiple layers. The result is that the pieces have endless interpretations. Consider floating petals in the air, playful spiritual movements, hearing rhythmical sounds, and swirling into a surrealistic space.

As for concept, the artist often titles her paintings Nagare, which is a Japanese word equivalent to the term ‘flow’. To Noriko, this relates to a whole variety of flows, considering for example rivers, clouds, time and sound.

The artist has widely and successfully exhibited solo and group exhibitions in Japan as well as across the world.

Atelier Kisai represents Noriko Kurafuji’s artworks through Gallery G-77.
